Description
This vintage Masonic coin (penny or token)is from the Missouri Chapter No. 1 R. A. M. in St. Louis, Missouri (now in St. Charles, MO). The design of this interesting Masonic item was patterned after a silver denarius issued during the reign of Caesar Augustus - with a comet reverse representing the comet ('Caesar's Comet') that appeared shortly following the assassination of Julius Caesar and widely interpreted to confirm his deification. The obverse identifies the chapter, with a bust of Caesar Augustus and his name. T
he reverse has an image representing the comet and the Latin words
DIVVS IVLIV
(Divine Julius).
The diameter is
approximately 31 mm (nearly 1¼"), and the composition is copper.
This item is in extremely fine condition, with very light actual wear, toning, and some soiling. A coin collector could describe this copper item as 'red and brown' due to toning, with some of the original reddish copper color remaining.
The illustrations in this listing are photos of the actual item being offered for sale, serving as part of the description. NOTE: The actual item has more detail, has a better toned copper color, and is brighter than in the photos.
